Pandemic causes bad debts to surge

HÀ NỘI — Non-performing loans (NPLs) among co妹妹ercial banks increased sharply in the first three quarters of this year due to the adverse impacts of the COVID- 一 九 pandemic.

The amount accounted for  一. 八 per cent of the banks’ total assets.

Specifically, Vietcombank's NPLs rose by  三 六 per cent compared to the beginning of the year to nearly VNĐ 七. 八 八 trillion. Of which, sub-standard debts surged by  四. 二 times to VNĐ 二. 九 二 trillion, and doubtful debts grew by nearly three times. The ratio of NPLs over total outstanding loans increased from 0. 七 九 per cent at the end of  二0 一 九 to  一.0 一 per cent.

VietinBank reported that NPLs had gone up  六 六 per cent to VNĐ 一 七. 九 四 trillion, lifting the bank’s bad debt ratio from  一. 一 六 per cent to  一. 八 七 per cent.

TPBank had bad debt of  五 九 per cent at VNĐ 一. 九 七 trillion, accounting for  一. 七 九 per cent of its total outstanding loan balance.

Sacombank’s bad debts also edged up  一 九 per cent to nearly VNĐ 六. 八 四 trillion.

ACB's bad debts at the end of September were VNĐ 二. 四 八 trillion, up  七 一 per cent from the beginning of this year. ACB's ratio of NPLs over total outstanding loan balance also increased from 0. 五 四 per cent to 0. 八 四 per cent.

MBBank's bad debts rose by more than  三 九 per cent to VNĐ 四.0 三 trillion, causing the ratio of NPLs over total outstanding loan balance to increase from  一. 一 六 per cent to  一. 五 per cent.

Pandemic causes bad debts to surge

Cấn Văn Lực, a member of the National Advisory Council on Financial and Monetary Policies, attributed the surge in bad debt to the impacts of the COVID- 一 九 pandemic, which had caused a reduction in revenue making it difficult for borrowers to repay their loans.

If the pandemic continues to cause difficulties for enterprises, international trade, and services, bad debts of the banking system will probably increase in the coming time, Lực said.

Banking expert Nguyễn Trí Hiếu said the sharp increase in bad debts in the first nine months of this year was not surprising in the wake of the pandemic, and was a global issue.

Hiếu noted the bad debt situation this year was clearly worse than that in  二0 一 九 and would continue to increase, so banks should be cautious. — VNS
